Title
1920s Dutch East Indies Balikpapan Kampong Baroe Pandansari Borneo Real Photo Postcard
Front
A sepia-toned real photographic view within a narrow white border, with a perforated tear-off stub along the left edge. There is no printed caption on the front; the title appears on the reverse.
The view is taken from high ground looking down and across the settlements of Kampong Baroe and Pandansari at Balikpapan, on the east coast of Borneo, with the oil installations and the sea beyond.
The foreground and middle ground are occupied by scattered housing on undulating ground. Nearest the camera are timber and thatch dwellings with corrugated iron roofs and woven bamboo walls, set among banana plants, fruit trees, and small garden plots laid out in cultivated rows on the hillside. Further back are larger European-style bungalows with wide hipped roofs, verandahs, and shuttered windows, standing in gardens among shade trees. A road winds through the settlement, with telegraph or electricity poles beside it and a small open-sided shelter at the roadside.
Beyond the housing the ground opens out into cleared scrub and rough grazing. Across the middle distance runs a long regular line of low barrack-like buildings with uniform pitched roofs, evidently company labour quarters. Behind them stands a large tank farm, with rows of cylindrical oil storage tanks, and beyond that the refinery itself, its stacks and process units sending up plumes of smoke against the sky.
To the right the land falls away to the water of Balikpapan Bay, pale and calm, with the low wooded coastline and a distant hill visible on the horizon. To the left the ground rises to a wooded ridge crowned with further large buildings, probably senior staff housing or company offices.
Condition notes: warm sepia tone, good detail, light overall toning, minor edge and corner wear, the left-hand perforated stub intact.
Back
Divided back, cream stock printed in grey-black. Printed text, in full:
Upper left, in two lines: “Balikpapan. Panorama Kampong.” above “Baroe & Pandansari.”
Down the centre, reading upwards: “Uitgevers Rheinborn A.-G., Hennemann & Co., Balikpapan.”
Right panel: three dotted address rules. No stamp box is printed.
No handwriting, no address, no stamp, and no postmark. The card is unposted and unused.
Translation of the Dutch and Malay: “Panorama Kampong Baroe & Pandansari” means a panorama of Kampong Baru and Pandansari, two quarters of the town, “kampong baru” meaning new village; “Uitgevers” means publishers.
Reverse condition: cream stock with pinkish age toning, scattered foxing specks and small orange stains, roughness and small losses along the perforated right edge, minor corner wear, no album or hinge remnants.
Estimated Era
Circa 1920s to 1930s, with a probable production range of about 1920 to 1940.
The card is a real photographic print on postcard stock issued by Rheinborn A.-G., Hennemann & Co. of Balikpapan, and belongs to the same locally published series as the Klandasan panorama, the Sennah-laantje, the Aula, the football ground, the Societeit rock, and the Makassar prau views. Balikpapan grew rapidly following the opening of the oil field and refinery from the 1890s under the Royal Dutch and later Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij, and the company laid out housing, labour quarters, and tank farms on the scale visible here during the interwar expansion.
The physical characteristics support the bracket. The card is a genuine silver gelatin print rather than a printed halftone, with a divided back, dotted address rules, no printed stamp box, and a perforated stub along one edge indicating it was issued as part of a bound souvenir booklet from which cards were torn. That format was common in the Netherlands Indies in the 1920s and 1930s.
The image content agrees. The refinery is shown in full operation with an extensive tank farm, while much of the surrounding ground remains cleared scrub with new housing spreading across it, the picture of a company town still expanding. The Dutch colonial captioning, using the old spelling “Baroe”, places the card firmly in the pre-independence period. Balikpapan was bombed and largely destroyed during the Pacific War from 1942 and again in the Allied landings of 1945, so views of the intact pre-war town necessarily predate that.
Note: Coins & Banknotes Grading
- Please
closely inspect the photos to understand the condition of the coins or
banknotes before proceeding with your purchase, as grading can be
subjective and varies from person to person. - Please do not place too much hope on grading companies to grade the notes accurately, as they can be notoriously inconsistent.
- Different graders have different opinions, eye factors, and knowledge that influence the final grading.
- Even grading companies do not guarantee that you will get the outcome of your desired grading.

you have any questions or require additional information, I am more
than happy to assist. Please feel free to contact me anytime.

Shipping duration can vary, typically ranging from 14 to 60 business
days for standard delivery. Please be aware that these shipping times
are estimates and depend on the operational efficiencies of the shipping
companies, which we cannot control. - Postage Costs:
Please note that international shipping via Australia Post is not
cheap. We strive to keep the shipping costs as low as possible,
sometimes even absorbing a portion of the costs. All orders are sent

If a buyer insists on requesting an untracked, cheaper shipping option,
we reserve the right to grant or refuse the request. If untracked

Please check Australia Post for tracking status. Since we do not own
Australia Post, we have absolutely no control over their handling times
and methods. Australia is a huge continent, and logistics are
challenging, coupled with one of the highest minimum wages in the world,
making costs and operations tough. Please check with your postal
service or local post offices if any unattended mail notes are left, as
we absolutely can’t control that remotely.
