Title
1920s Dutch East Indies Balikpapan Klandasan Panorama Borneo Real Photo Postcard
Front
A sepia-toned real photographic view within a narrow white border, with a perforated tear-off stub along the left edge. There is no printed caption on the front; the title appears on the reverse.
The view is taken from high ground looking down and along the shoreline at Klandasan, the coastal quarter of Balikpapan on the east coast of Borneo.
Running diagonally through the centre of the composition is the Hoofdweg, the main road, a broad pale unmetalled or lightly surfaced highway following the curve of the coast. It is lined on the seaward side with a row of coconut palms and on the landward side by buildings.
To the left, the ground rises in terraces occupied by European-style bungalows and company housing: single-storey buildings with wide verandahs, shuttered windows, and low-pitched hipped roofs, set in gardens among coconut palms and shade trees. Larger structures further left include long barrack-like ranges and what appear to be warehouses or workshops with corrugated roofs. A denser cluster of shophouses and smaller dwellings with palm-thatch and iron roofs occupies the middle ground.
Along the seaward side stand a series of long, low warehouse or godown buildings with broad corrugated roofs and open sides, some built out over the water on timber piling with jetties and landing stages projecting onto the beach. Several small houses on stilts stand at the water’s edge. Beached and moored craft, including small praus, are visible on the sand.
The right half of the image is filled by the calm sea of the Makassar Strait, pale and almost mirror-like, with a small wooded rocky headland projecting into it at the centre right and a sailing prau at anchor in the middle distance. Beyond, the coastline recedes into haze.
Condition notes: warm sepia tone, good detail, scattered pinkish stains at the upper right and centre, a fine diagonal scratch at the upper right, light edge and corner wear, the left-hand perforated stub intact.
Back
Divided back, cream stock printed in grey-black. Printed text, in full:
Upper left, in two lines: “Balikpapan. Panorama Klandasan.” above “met Hoofdweg.”
Down the centre, reading upwards: “Uitgevers Rheinborn A.-G., Hennemann & Co., Balikpapan.”
Right panel: three dotted address rules. No stamp box is printed.
No handwriting, no address, no stamp, and no postmark. The card is unposted and unused.
Translation of the Dutch: “Panorama Klandasan met Hoofdweg” means “Panorama of Klandasan with the main road”; “Uitgevers” means publishers.
Reverse condition: cream stock with pinkish age toning, scattered foxing specks, roughness and small losses along the perforated right edge, minor corner wear, no album or hinge remnants.
Estimated Era
Circa 1920s to 1930s, with a probable production range of about 1920 to 1940.
The card is a real photographic print on postcard stock issued by Rheinborn A.-G., Hennemann & Co. of Balikpapan, and belongs to the same locally published series as the Makassar prau view. Balikpapan grew rapidly following the opening of the oil field and refinery from the 1890s under the Royal Dutch and later Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij, and by the interwar years supported a substantial European community served by local retailers producing souvenir views of this kind.
The physical characteristics support the bracket. The card is a genuine silver gelatin print rather than a printed halftone, with a divided back, dotted address rules, no printed stamp box, and a perforated stub along one edge indicating it was issued as part of a bound souvenir booklet from which cards were torn. That format was common in the Netherlands Indies in the 1920s and 1930s.
The Dutch colonial captioning, with no Indonesian equivalent, places the card firmly in the pre-independence period. The buildings shown are of interwar company and commercial type, and there is no sign of the extensive wartime destruction that followed. Balikpapan was bombed and largely destroyed during the Pacific War from 1942 and again in the Allied landings of 1945, so views of the intact pre-war town necessarily predate that.
Note: Coins & Banknotes Grading
- Please
closely inspect the photos to understand the condition of the coins or
banknotes before proceeding with your purchase, as grading can be
subjective and varies from person to person. - Please do not place too much hope on grading companies to grade the notes accurately, as they can be notoriously inconsistent.
- Different graders have different opinions, eye factors, and knowledge that influence the final grading.
- Even grading companies do not guarantee that you will get the outcome of your desired grading.

you have any questions or require additional information, I am more
than happy to assist. Please feel free to contact me anytime.

We offer combined shipping for all banknotes. To take advantage of this
offer, please add the items to your cart together and only proceed to
checkout once you are ready to pay. The combined shipping is calculated
at the checkout page. Please do not pay for items individually, as the
shipping costs will not be combined that way. - Customs, Duty, Tariff Fees: Buyers are responsible for any applicable customs, duty or tariff fees.
- International Shipping:
Shipping duration can vary, typically ranging from 14 to 60 business
days for standard delivery. Please be aware that these shipping times
are estimates and depend on the operational efficiencies of the shipping
companies, which we cannot control. - Postage Costs:
Please note that international shipping via Australia Post is not
cheap. We strive to keep the shipping costs as low as possible,
sometimes even absorbing a portion of the costs. All orders are sent
with end-to-end tracking for safety and reliability. - Untracked Shipping Requests:
If a buyer insists on requesting an untracked, cheaper shipping option,
we reserve the right to grant or refuse the request. If untracked
shipping is granted, please be aware that we have no way of tracking the
mail, and the buyer is strictly responsible for any losses in transit. - Tracking and Logistics:
Please check Australia Post for tracking status. Since we do not own
Australia Post, we have absolutely no control over their handling times
and methods. Australia is a huge continent, and logistics are
challenging, coupled with one of the highest minimum wages in the world,
making costs and operations tough. Please check with your postal
service or local post offices if any unattended mail notes are left, as
we absolutely can’t control that remotely.

- Please be respectful when communicating with us. We do not tolerate abusive behaviour from buyers.
- If you do not agree with the postage cost or any other terms, please refrain from making a purchase.
