Title: 1930 Germany Berlin Universität und Dom University Cathedral Enver Bey Bus Real Photo Postcard

Description:

Front: A black and white real photograph postcard captioned in white lettering at the lower left “Berlin. Universität und Dom.” The image shows a busy street scene on Unter den Linden in Berlin photographed from an elevated angle, with the Königliche Universität (now Humboldt University) main building dominating the centre and left of the composition. The university’s long neoclassical pale stuccoed facade stretches across the middle ground with its characteristic central pavilion of giant Corinthian columns and rooflines animated with classical sculptural figures. The wrought-iron fence and gate piers with sculptural figures separate the university forecourt from the street. To the right side of the composition, the great dome of the Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral) rises majestically in the background with its distinctive Italian High Renaissance silhouette, along with the smaller dome of the Hohenzollern crypt. In the foreground, the wide cobblestone street of Unter den Linden is alive with traffic typical of late Weimar-era Berlin: two open-top double-decker omnibuses of the Berlin transit authority both prominently displaying large rooftop advertising boards for “ENVER BEY” cigarettes (a popular Berlin tobacco brand of the era), a horse-drawn hackney carriage with passengers under a canopy roof at the right edge, motorcars and a motorcycle, plus pedestrians in late 1920s/early 1930s attire walking along the pavements. A tall ornate gas-style street lamp post stands in the centre of the composition. The photograph captures a moment of bustling commercial activity along Berlin’s most prestigious boulevard.

Back: Unused divided back real photo postcard. The reverse is blank with no handwritten message, address, postmark, or stamp, except for a small pencil notation “1.” in the upper left corner (likely a collector’s catalogue number). A vertical printed dividing line runs down the centre with the publisher’s reference “I.W.B. No. 180” printed in small text along the centre line. The right side bears three horizontal printed lines for the address area and a dotted rectangular stamp box outline in the upper right corner. Printed in small text at the lower left: “Echte Photographie.” (Genuine Photograph).

Authenticity Note: The card appears to be a genuine vintage Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) from approximately 1928-1932, exhibiting period-appropriate printing techniques, card stock toning, and a collector’s pencil notation. The card stock is well-preserved which may suggest careful storage in a collector’s album. The ENVER BEY cigarette advertising on the buses and the vehicle types visible in the photograph are precisely consistent with late Weimar-era Berlin.

Era and Historical Significance: This postcard dates to approximately 1928-1932, the late Weimar Republic period just before Adolf Hitler’s seizure of power in January 1933. The “Echte Photographie” (Genuine Photograph) designation indicates it is a real photographic silver gelatin print rather than a printed lithograph, the higher quality format favoured for RPPCs of this era. The image captures two of Berlin’s most important imperial-era monuments at the heart of the city’s historic centre. The Königliche Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin was founded in 1810 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III on the initiative of Prussian education reformer Wilhelm von Humboldt, becoming one of the world’s most prestigious universities and pioneering the “Humboldtian model” of higher education. By the time of this photograph it had produced 29 Nobel laureates including Albert Einstein, Max Planck, and Robert Koch, and counted Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Otto von Bismarck, Heinrich Heine, and the Brothers Grimm among its alumni. The main building was originally constructed 1748-1766 by Johann Boumann the Elder as the Palais of Prince Heinrich of Prussia. The Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral) visible at the right was constructed 1894-1905 in High Renaissance and Baroque revival style under Kaiser Wilhelm II to designs by Julius Carl Raschdorff, serving as the principal Protestant cathedral of the German Empire and the dynastic burial church of the Hohenzollern royal family. Just months or a few years after this postcard was photographed, both institutions would be engulfed by the Nazi catastrophe. On the night of 10 May 1933, Nazi students from this very university organised the infamous book burning on the Opernplatz directly across the street, destroying tens of thousands of books by Jewish, communist, liberal, and “degenerate” authors including Heinrich Heine, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Bertolt Brecht, and many former alumni and faculty. Approximately one third of the university’s faculty was dismissed under Nazi racial laws, with Albert Einstein among those emigrating. Both buildings suffered devastating damage during Allied bombing and the Battle of Berlin in 1945. The Berliner Dom was severely damaged by an incendiary bomb in May 1944 which destroyed the lantern of the main dome, and the building stood as a ruin throughout the GDR period until restoration finally began in 1975 and was completed in 1993 after German reunification. The university building was also heavily damaged and rebuilt during the GDR period, when the institution was renamed Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 1949 in honour of brothers Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt. Both buildings fell within the Soviet sector and later East Berlin throughout the Cold War. Today both the Humboldt University and the fully restored Berliner Dom stand on Unter den Linden as iconic Berlin landmarks, making this Weimar-era postcard a precious documentary record of Berlin’s cultural heart in the brief democratic interlude between the German Empire and the Third Reich. The ENVER BEY cigarette advertising visible on the buses adds wonderful period commercial detail, as this Oriental tobacco brand was a popular German cigarette of the 1920s and 1930s, taking its name from Enver Pasha, the Ottoman Turkish military leader.
