Title: 1942 Japan Tsuchiura Naval Air Corps Seaplane Water Takeoff Fitness Flight Colourised Postcard

Front Description:

A colourised photographic postcard depicting an Imperial Japanese Navy biplane floatplane in the dramatic moment of water takeoff, throwing up a large white spray of foam and churned water beneath its twin floats as it accelerates across the surface of Lake Kasumigaura. The aircraft is positioned on the right side of the composition, viewed from a low angle at water level, emphasising the dynamic energy of the takeoff run. The floatplane is a biplane design with two sets of wings connected by interplane struts and bracing wires, with a large radial engine and enclosed cockpit area. The fuselage, wings, and floats are rendered in dark olive-brown tones consistent with Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft colouring of the period. A bold red Hinomaru roundel — the Japanese rising sun circle — is clearly visible on the fuselage side. Two crew members are partially visible in open cockpit positions. The twin floats are mounted on V-strut undercarriage frames below the fuselage, and a small stabilising float is mounted under each lower wing tip. The aircraft is most consistent with a Yokosuka K5Y or similar two-seat biplane trainer floatplane variant used extensively at Tsuchiura for naval aviator training. The surrounding water is rendered in dark grey-green choppy waves extending across the full width of the image. A small support boat is faintly visible far left on the horizon. The sky above is light blue with thin white cloud wisps and a pale horizon. A prominent diagonal scratch or crease line runs across the upper portion of the image. The bottom caption printed in black Japanese reads from right to left: 飛沫ヲ揚ゲテ(適性飛行)土浦海軍航空隊 — translating as: “Throwing Up Spray (Fitness/Aptitude Flight) — Tsuchiura Naval Air Corps.” The far right of the bottom caption reads: 濱可許日九月十年七十和昭 二ノ四一〇號七二第錠 — “Approved October 9, Showa 17 (1942), Registration No. 7210-1/4, Yokohama,” confirming the identical censor approval date as the companion judo and kendo postcards from the same Tsuchiura series.

Back Description:

The back is plain with a single thin grey vertical dividing line separating the message area on the left from the address area on the right. A plain solid outer rectangle with dotted inner border stamp box is positioned in the upper right corner, with a noticeable diagonal crease running through the upper right corner of the card consistent with the crease visible on the front. Along the far right edge, printed vertically in small black Japanese characters: サン・カ・せ商業 (San Ka Se Shōgyō — the same publisher series designation as the companion judo, kendo, and rowing boat Tsuchiura Naval Air Corps postcards, confirming all belong to the same officially issued set). The card stock has aged to a warm salmon-orange tone with visible fibrous texture, scattered surface soiling, and light foxing spots throughout. The card is entirely unwritten and unposted with no handwritten message, address, or postage stamp affixed.

Estimated Era: Early Showa Period Japan, precisely approved and issued October 9, 1942 (Showa 17), during the Pacific War. The fourth confirmed card from the same officially censored Tsuchiura Naval Air Corps training postcard series alongside the judo (0034), kendo (0036), and rowing boat (0032) cards, all sharing identical censor approval date, registration number, and publisher designation.

Note: Coins & Banknotes Grading

  • Please closely inspect the photos to understand the condition of the coins or banknotes before proceeding with your purchase, as grading can be subjective and varies from person to person.
  • Please do not place too much hope on grading companies to grade the notes accurately, as they can be notoriously inconsistent.
  • Different graders have different opinions, eye factors, and knowledge that influence the final grading.
  • Even grading companies do not guarantee that you will get the outcome of your desired grading.

To take advantage of this offer, please add the items to your cart together and only proceed to checkout once you are ready to pay. eBay will consolidate the shipping at the checkout page. Please do not pay for items individually, as the shipping costs will not be combined that way.
  • Customs, Duty, Tariff Fees: Buyers are responsible for any applicable customs, duty or tariff fees.
  • International Shipping: Shipping duration can vary, typically ranging from 14 to 60 business days for standard delivery. Please be aware that these shipping times are estimates and depend on the operational efficiencies of the shipping companies, which we cannot control.
  • Postage Costs: Please note that international shipping via Australia Post is not cheap. We strive to keep the shipping costs as low as possible, sometimes even absorbing a portion of the costs. However, eBay charges fees on both the value of items sold and the shipping costs quoted. Additionally, eBay mandates the use of end-to-end tracking for safety and reliability.
  • Untracked Shipping Requests: If a buyer insists on requesting an untracked, cheaper shipping option, we reserve the right to grant or refuse the request due to eBay’s strict shipping policies. If untracked shipping is granted, please be aware that we have no way of tracking the mail, and the buyer is strictly responsible for any losses in transit.
  • Tracking and Logistics: Please check Australia Post for tracking status. Since we do not own Australia Post, we have absolutely no control over their handling times and methods. Australia is a huge continent, and logistics are challenging, coupled with one of the highest minimum wages in the world, making costs and operations tough. Please check with your postal service or local post offices if any unattended mail notes are left, as we absolutely can’t control that remotely.
