1970s Hong Kong Chinese Fishing Junks Battened Sails Misty Harbour N851 Postcard

Note: there is a mismatch between the printed English caption and the image on this card. The caption reads “Chinese junk — With the background of Modern Buildings…”, but the front photograph is actually a serene study of a cluster of moored fishing junks with their battened sails raised, reflected in still water, with misty hills behind — there are no modern buildings visible. This appears to be a caption/image pairing quirk in the National Co. series (the N851 caption text does not match its picture). I’ve described the actual image and noted the discrepancy.

Title:
1970s Hong Kong Chinese Fishing Junks Battened Sails Misty Harbour China N851 Postcard

Front Description:
A serene, atmospheric colour photograph of a cluster of traditional Chinese fishing junks moored together on calm, mirror-still water, their tall battened sails raised. Around a dozen junks are rafted closely together in the centre of the image, their characteristic ribbed, fan-shaped lug sails — in weathered shades of brown, tan, russet, grey, and cream — overlapping to form a dramatic silhouette of masts, battens, and canvas against a soft, hazy pale sky. The dark hulls of the junks and their rigging are reflected, along with the sails, in the glassy surface of the water below, creating a striking symmetrical mirror image. A couple of small sampans float nearby on the calm water to the left and right. In the background, the faint misty outlines of hills or mountains fade into the pale haze on both sides. The muted light, still water, and soft mist give the scene a tranquil, almost painterly quality, capturing the timeless beauty of Hong Kong’s traditional sailing junks.

Estimated Era:
Approximately 1970s. The scene of traditional battened-sail fishing junks is consistent with the 1970s, when such vessels were still a common sight in Hong Kong waters. The divided back with bold “POST CARD” lettering, the paired English and Japanese captions, and the “Publish by National Co.” imprint with catalogue code N851 place it firmly within the same National Co. Hong Kong tourist series as the other N-series cards in this group (anchored to circa 1975–1985 by the dated N818, N829, and N839 examples).

A note on the caption: the printed English caption (“Chinese junk — With the background of Modern Buildings being the tourist centre in Kowloon, Hong Kong”) and the Japanese caption both describe a junk set against modern Kowloon buildings — but this does not match the actual photograph, which shows moored junks with raised sails reflected in still water against misty hills, with no modern buildings in view. This is a caption/image mismatch within the National Co. series (the same “Chinese junk with modern buildings” caption text was used on the earlier V105 multiview card, where it correctly described a junk against the skyline). Here the wrong caption text appears to have been paired with this tranquil junk image.

Note: Coins & Banknotes Grading
  • Please
closely inspect the photos to understand the condition of the coins or
banknotes before proceeding with your purchase, as grading can be
subjective and varies from person to person.
  • Please do not place too much hope on grading companies to grade the notes accurately, as they can be notoriously inconsistent.
  • Different graders have different opinions, eye factors, and knowledge that influence the final grading.
  • Even grading companies do not guarantee that you will get the outcome of your desired grading.
  • If
you have any questions or require additional information, I am more
than happy to assist. Please feel free to contact me anytime.

Shipping Information

  • Combined Shipping:
We offer combined shipping for all banknotes. To take advantage of this
offer, please add the items to your cart together and only proceed to
checkout once you are ready to pay. The combined shipping is calculated
at the checkout page. Please do not pay for items individually, as the
shipping costs will not be combined that way.
  • Customs, Duty, Tariff Fees: Buyers are responsible for any applicable customs, duty or tariff fees.
  • International Shipping:
Shipping duration can vary, typically ranging from 14 to 60 business
days for standard delivery. Please be aware that these shipping times
are estimates and depend on the operational efficiencies of the shipping
    companies, which we cannot control.
  • Postage Costs:
Please note that international shipping via Australia Post is not
cheap. We strive to keep the shipping costs as low as possible,
sometimes even absorbing a portion of the costs. All orders are sent
with end-to-end tracking for safety and reliability.
  • Untracked Shipping Requests:
If a buyer insists on requesting an untracked, cheaper shipping option,
we reserve the right to grant or refuse the request. If untracked
shipping is granted, please be aware that we have no way of tracking the
mail, and the buyer is strictly responsible for any losses in transit.
  • Tracking and Logistics:
Please check Australia Post for tracking status. Since we do not own
Australia Post, we have absolutely no control over their handling times
and methods. Australia is a huge continent, and logistics are
challenging, coupled with one of the highest minimum wages in the world,
making costs and operations tough. Please check with your postal
service or local post offices if any unattended mail notes are left, as
we absolutely can’t control that remotely.
