Title: 1970s Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport Plane Landing Lung Tseung Road Aerial Panorama Postcard

Estimated Era: Early to mid-1970s, based on the level of urban development visible in the foreground housing estates, the relatively sparse construction around the airport perimeter, and the print and card style.

Building Status: Kai Tak Airport closed permanently on July 6, 1998, replaced by Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok. The entire Kai Tak site has since been redeveloped into a new urban district including a cruise terminal, sports facilities and residential towers. The distinctive red and white chequered hillside approach marker visible on the left — the famous Chequerboard Hill (方格山) — was decommissioned along with the airport and its distinctive pattern was removed, though the hill itself remains.

Front Description: A colour photograph taken from a high hillside vantage point on Lung Tseung Road looking down and across a sweeping panoramic view over Kowloon and Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong. A large four-engine jet aircraft — appearing to be a Boeing 747 or similar wide-body — is visible in the upper centre of the image in a head-on view, gear down and on approach to land at Kai Tak, silhouetted small against the bright blue sky with white cumulus clouds. The iconic Kai Tak runway is clearly visible in the middle of the image — a narrow reclaimed land peninsula extending out into Kowloon Bay, with the runway’s threshold and runway markings clearly defined against the dark blue harbour water surrounding it on three sides. A large power station chimney stack with red and white banded markings is visible at the left, with the distinctive Chequerboard Hill approach marker in red and white squares on the hillside to its left — this was the crucial visual aid that pilots used during the famous curved IGS approach to runway 13. The harbour beyond the runway stretches to Hong Kong Island, whose skyline of tall buildings is visible in the upper right distance. The foreground shows the newly developed residential areas of Kowloon hillside — multiple large green-grey housing estate blocks, some still with surrounding construction or bare ground, and dense tree coverage. A white multi-storey institutional or residential building with balconies is visible in the centre foreground. Mountains frame the entire background panorama.

Back Description: Three-language caption at top: Chinese 從龍翔道俯望航機降落情形, English “View of plane landing, from Lung Tseung Road”, and Japanese 龍ショ通リから空港の空降風景. POST CARD / From Hong Kong printed in large serif letters at centre right. STAMP box with scalloped border at upper right. Divided back with vertical line. Four dotted address lines on the right side. Publisher details at lower right: G.P.O. BOX 6514 HONG KONG with a small Chinese junk sailing boat logo and the number 23. Unused. No stamp, no handwriting, no address.

Note: Coins & Banknotes Grading

  • Please closely inspect the photos to understand the condition of the coins or banknotes before proceeding with your purchase, as grading can be subjective and varies from person to person.
  • Please do not place too much hope on grading companies to grade the notes accurately, as they can be notoriously inconsistent.
  • Different graders have different opinions, eye factors, and knowledge that influence the final grading.
  • Even grading companies do not guarantee that you will get the outcome of your desired grading.

Shipping Information

  • Complimentary Combined Shipping: We offer free combined shipping for all banknotes. To take advantage of this offer, please add the items to your cart together and only proceed to checkout once you are ready to pay. eBay will consolidate the shipping at the checkout page. Please do not pay for items individually, as the shipping costs will not be combined that way.
  • Customs Fees: Buyers are responsible for any applicable customs fees.
  • International Shipping: Shipping duration can vary, typically ranging from 14 to 60 business days for standard delivery. Please be aware that these shipping times are estimates and depend on the operational efficiencies of the shipping companies, which we cannot control.
  • Postage Costs: Please note that international shipping via Australia Post is not cheap. We strive to keep the shipping costs as low as possible, sometimes even absorbing a portion of the costs. However, eBay charges fees on both the value of items sold and the shipping costs quoted. Additionally, eBay mandates the use of end-to-end tracking for safety and reliability.
  • Untracked Shipping Requests: If a buyer insists on requesting an untracked, cheaper shipping option, we reserve the right to grant or refuse the request due to eBay’s strict shipping policies. If untracked shipping is granted, please be aware that we have no way of tracking the mail, and the buyer is strictly responsible for any losses in transit.
  • Tracking and Logistics: Please check Australia Post for tracking status. Since we do not own Australia Post, we have absolutely no control over their handling times and methods. Australia is a huge continent, and logistics are challenging, coupled with one of the highest minimum wages in the world, making costs and operations tough. Please check with your postal service or local post offices if any unattended mail notes are left, as we absolutely can’t control that remotely.

VAT and GST

  • We are not in control of charging any VAT or GST, as these are automatically applied by eBay.

Customer Conduct

  • Please be respectful when communicating with us. We do not tolerate abusive behaviour from buyers.
  • If you do not agree with the postage cost, eBay’s strict shipping policies, or any other terms, please refrain from making a purchase.
