Title
1970s New Zealand Auckland City Harbour from Mt Eden Skyline Tiki Card Postcard

Front
A colour daylight panorama looking north from the summit of Mount Eden across the city of Auckland to the Waitematā Harbour and the North Shore beyond.

The foreground and lower portion of the picture are filled with the inner suburbs on the slopes below the volcanic cone: closely spaced timber villas and bungalows with red, green and silver roofs set among mature trees, together with larger institutional and commercial buildings, one a substantial two-storey red-brick block with white window surrounds, and several long flat-roofed modern buildings in white and pale blue. At the lower right a section of elevated motorway carriageway runs across the frame on concrete piers, with vehicles on it and cleared land alongside.

Beyond this rises the central business district, presented as a cluster of modern office towers in white, grey and pale blue concrete and glass, of varying heights and rectangular slab or tower form, interspersed with older lower masonry buildings, church spires and roofs. Construction cranes are visible among the taller blocks at the left. The towers thin out to the right, where further blocks and apartment buildings stand among trees.

Past the city the Waitematā Harbour extends across the picture as a wide band of blue-green water, with moored yachts and small craft visible near the shore and a white passenger or cargo vessel lying off the wharves at the right. On the far side the North Shore suburbs spread over rolling ground as a dense carpet of pale roofs and greenery, extending to the Devonport peninsula and headlands at the right, with the harbour bridge approaches faintly visible. Beyond, low blue hills and the outer Hauraki Gulf recede toward the horizon.

The upper half of the card is occupied by sky: a long bank of brilliant white cumulus stretching across the middle distance beneath a clear deep blue upper sky.

Across the lower centre of the image, in white lettering on a black bar, is printed:

“AUCKLAND CITY AND HARBOUR FROM MT. EDEN, N.Z.”

The card has a white border and a semi-glossy photographic surface.

Back
Printed in red at upper centre, beside a stylised line drawing of a Māori tiki figure holding a taiaha, the shaft of which extends down the centre of the card as a dividing line with a carved and feathered head:

“Tiki
CARD”

Printed in red at upper right:

“STAMP”

Printed in red on the right-hand panel:

“TO ________”

with three further ruled address lines below.

Printed in red at lower left:

“AUCKLAND CITY AND HARBOUR FROM MT EDEN, New Zealand
From the summit of Mt Eden, one of Auckland’s extinct volcanic cones, views may be obtained of the whole Auckland isthmus.”

Printed in red at lower left below the caption:

“P1515”

Printed in red at lower right:

“PICTORIAL PUBLICATIONS LTD
HASTINGS — NEW ZEALAND”

There is no stamp, postmark, address or handwritten sender’s message; the card is unused and unposted. The reverse shows cream toning overall with scattered foxing spots, and there is light edge and corner wear.

Estimated Era
Circa 1970s. The card is a continental-format chrome issue in the Tiki Card range published by Pictorial Publications Ltd. of Hastings, with catalogue number P1515, a series produced from the 1960s through the 1970s. The photograph itself points to the earlier or middle 1970s: the central business district shows a substantial cluster of modern office towers reflecting the Auckland building boom of the late 1960s and early 1970s, with construction cranes still active among them, while the skyline remains well below the scale reached in the 1980s. The section of elevated urban motorway in the foreground is complete and in use, placing the view after the central motorway construction of the 1960s and early 1970s.

Note: Coins & Banknotes Grading
  • Please
closely inspect the photos to understand the condition of the coins or
banknotes before proceeding with your purchase, as grading can be
subjective and varies from person to person.
  • Please do not place too much hope on grading companies to grade the notes accurately, as they can be notoriously inconsistent.
  • Different graders have different opinions, eye factors, and knowledge that influence the final grading.
  • Even grading companies do not guarantee that you will get the outcome of your desired grading.
  • If
you have any questions or require additional information, I am more
than happy to assist. Please feel free to contact me anytime.

Shipping Information

  • Combined Shipping:
We offer combined shipping for all banknotes. To take advantage of this
offer, please add the items to your cart together and only proceed to
checkout once you are ready to pay. The combined shipping is calculated
at the checkout page. Please do not pay for items individually, as the
shipping costs will not be combined that way.
  • Customs, Duty, Tariff Fees: Buyers are responsible for any applicable customs, duty or tariff fees.
  • International Shipping:
Shipping duration can vary, typically ranging from 14 to 60 business
days for standard delivery. Please be aware that these shipping times
are estimates and depend on the operational efficiencies of the shipping
    companies, which we cannot control.
  • Postage Costs:
Please note that international shipping via Australia Post is not
cheap. We strive to keep the shipping costs as low as possible,
sometimes even absorbing a portion of the costs. All orders are sent
with end-to-end tracking for safety and reliability.
  • Untracked Shipping Requests:
If a buyer insists on requesting an untracked, cheaper shipping option,
we reserve the right to grant or refuse the request. If untracked
shipping is granted, please be aware that we have no way of tracking the
mail, and the buyer is strictly responsible for any losses in transit.
  • Tracking and Logistics:
Please check Australia Post for tracking status. Since we do not own
Australia Post, we have absolutely no control over their handling times
and methods. Australia is a huge continent, and logistics are
challenging, coupled with one of the highest minimum wages in the world,
making costs and operations tough. Please check with your postal
service or local post offices if any unattended mail notes are left, as
we absolutely can’t control that remotely.

Customer Conduct

  • Please be respectful when communicating with us. We do not tolerate abusive behaviour from buyers.
  • If you do not agree with the postage cost or any other terms, please refrain from making a purchase.
