Title

1980s Australia Brisbane QLD Riverside Expressway Jubilee Fountain River View Cars Postcard

Front Description

A vintage colour photographic postcard with a decorative deckle (scalloped) edge, bearing the greeting “Greetings from BRISBANE” in yellow script and bold lettering across the blue sky. The elevated view looks along the Brisbane River from the edge of the city centre, Queensland, on a bright sunny day.

The sweeping curve of the Riverside Expressway dominates the left of the scene, its elevated white concrete carriageway on tall pillars following the riverbank, with a yellow sedan travelling along it. Beyond, the low arching span of a road bridge crosses the river, and in the middle of the water the tall white plume of the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Fountain shoots skyward. A work barge or dredge moves along the river towards the viewer, with pontoons and moorings along the far bank.

On the left skyline stand the office towers of central Brisbane, including a building topped with a large red “ANSETT” sign, a tall white tower, a dark multi-storey block and a slender white tower further along, with heritage buildings and trees lining the riverside. Across the river, the hillside suburbs are dotted with houses and red roofs, with a low mountain on the horizon.

In the foreground is a street lined with parking meters and a classic collection of Australian cars of the era: a dark blue sedan with a white vinyl roof, a white panel van, an orange-and-white station wagon, a pink Mini and a bright red early 1980s sedan, with a white car at far left. Leafy umbrella trees and red-flowering shrubs fill the bottom of the frame. The card is in very good condition with bright colours and minimal wear.

Estimated Era

Circa late 1970s to early 1980s. The Riverside Expressway was completed in the 1970s and the Jubilee Fountain was installed to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, so the photograph dates from after then. The cars parked in the foreground are typical of Australian roads around 1978 to 1983, with a mix of 1970s Holden and Ford models, a Mini and a newer boxy red sedan in the early 1980s style. The Ansett sign on the skyline reflects the airline’s prominence in that era. The publisher’s Melbourne telephone number in the older seven-digit format and the deckle-edged continental-size card are also consistent with Nu-Color-Vue production of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

A Little History

The Riverside Expressway was built in the early 1970s along the northern bank of the Brisbane River, carrying the Pacific Motorway traffic past the edge of the CBD on elevated sections suspended over the water. Though controversial for cutting the city off from its river frontage, it became one of Brisbane’s most recognisable pieces of infrastructure. The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Fountain was installed in the river near the city to commemorate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, its tall jet of water becoming a popular sight for visitors and commuters alike before it was eventually removed. Ansett, whose sign stands on the city skyline, was one of Australia’s two major domestic airlines until its collapse in 2001.

Note: Coins & Banknotes Grading
  • Please
closely inspect the photos to understand the condition of the coins or
banknotes before proceeding with your purchase, as grading can be
subjective and varies from person to person.
  • Please do not place too much hope on grading companies to grade the notes accurately, as they can be notoriously inconsistent.
  • Different graders have different opinions, eye factors, and knowledge that influence the final grading.
  • Even grading companies do not guarantee that you will get the outcome of your desired grading.
  • If
you have any questions or require additional information, I am more
than happy to assist. Please feel free to contact me anytime.

Shipping Information

  • Combined Shipping:
We offer combined shipping for all banknotes. To take advantage of this
offer, please add the items to your cart together and only proceed to
checkout once you are ready to pay. The combined shipping is calculated
at the checkout page. Please do not pay for items individually, as the
shipping costs will not be combined that way.
  • Customs, Duty, Tariff Fees: Buyers are responsible for any applicable customs, duty or tariff fees.
  • International Shipping:
Shipping duration can vary, typically ranging from 14 to 60 business
days for standard delivery. Please be aware that these shipping times
are estimates and depend on the operational efficiencies of the shipping
    companies, which we cannot control.
  • Postage Costs:
Please note that international shipping via Australia Post is not
cheap. We strive to keep the shipping costs as low as possible,
sometimes even absorbing a portion of the costs. All orders are sent
with end-to-end tracking for safety and reliability.
  • Untracked Shipping Requests:
If a buyer insists on requesting an untracked, cheaper shipping option,
we reserve the right to grant or refuse the request. If untracked
shipping is granted, please be aware that we have no way of tracking the
mail, and the buyer is strictly responsible for any losses in transit.
  • Tracking and Logistics:
Please check Australia Post for tracking status. Since we do not own
Australia Post, we have absolutely no control over their handling times
and methods. Australia is a huge continent, and logistics are
challenging, coupled with one of the highest minimum wages in the world,
making costs and operations tough. Please check with your postal
service or local post offices if any unattended mail notes are left, as
we absolutely can’t control that remotely.
