Notable historical significance:
The Ilyushin Il-86 was the first widebody airliner developed in the Soviet Union and was designed to carry large passenger loads on domestic routes across the vast Soviet territory. It featured a unique “luggage-at-the-door” system allowing passengers to bring baggage directly onboard and store it in compartments below the passenger cabin. The aircraft primarily served Aeroflot and later Russian airlines before being retired in the early 2000s.
